FEATURES FOR ELIGIBLE INTERNSHIP-SITE INSTITUTIONS

A convenient starting point for considering a range of eligible internship-site institutions is the half-dozen or so State College-vicinity institutions that the History Department has forged working relationships with.

Currently these institution-sites are: the Centre County Historical Society; the Centre County Historical Museum; Penn State All-Sports Museum; the Huntingdon County Historical Society; the Pennsylvania Military Museum; the Boalsburg Heritage Museum; the Juniata County Historical Society; Penn State's Pasto Agricultural Museum & Ag Progress Days; the Piper Aviation Museum; the Clearfield County Historical Society.

Note that the these local institutions do not "reserve" interns for Penn State students; and, in all cases, it is the institution's decision, not the History Department's or Dr. Milligan's, as to whether a particular student will be chosen (or not) for an internship.

You are welcome to take the initiative and to arrange an internship with a credible site- institution of your own choosing. This institution may, for example, be the local historical society located in your hometown—and fashioning a LA 495 (History) internship during the summer months, while you living at home, is a great option to consider.

For an institution to be deemed appropriate by the History Department for sponsoring your LA 495 (History) internship, the following conditions must be met:

  1. it must provide sufficient on-site intern supervision during the duration of the internship;
  2. it must possess the facilities and resources so that the student intern is able to satisfactorily comply with the service requirement;
  3. historical archival materials, sufficient enough to support a History academic research paper, must be housed at the institution.

Under the right circumstances, a particularly challenging and substantive research project supervised by a History Department faculty member could suffice in meeting the above conditions.
